Step 1: Match The Voltage & Compatibility

Before installing the E12 bulbs to the socket, you need to check on the voltage rating of the power supply. E12 bulbs are available in different voltage ratings. They can be 120V or 240 V. Again, you will also find E12 bulbs that run at just 12V. These low-voltage E12 bulbs are usually used for decorating lighting. Whatever voltage you choose should match that of your power supply’s voltage. If your E12 socket provides a voltage of 120V, the E12 bulb you use should also have 120V. If you choose a bulb with a lower voltage, it will overpower the bulb and damage it.

Can You Use an E14 Bulb In An E12 Socket or Vice Versa?

No, you can’t directly use an E14 bulb for an E12 socket or vice versa, as the base size differs. E14 bulb bases have a diameter of 14 mm. At the same time, E12 sockets are designed to fit a 12mm bulb base. So, an E14 bulb won’t fit in an E12 socket as there is a 2mm difference in size. Even if it gets in anywho, screwing it will be tough, and you will also face issues while taking it out. Similarly, inserting an E12 bulb into an E14 socket will get too loose, and you can fit it in. 

However, by using an adapter, you can use an E14 bulb to an E12 socket or vice versa. This adapter reduces the size of an E14 socket so that an E12 bulb can fit. Similarly, using the adapter, you can also increase the diameter of an E12 bulb and let it work in an E14 base. Thus, you can change them interchangeably by using an adapter that acts as a bridge.
