Why Do LED Bulbs Buzz When Dimmed?

Lighting has developed throughout the years into a valuable product for everyday life. It has progressed from conventional to compact luminous to super helpful LED lights.

An LED bulb produces fluorescence with the help of light-emitting diodes. These bulbs are one of the most advanced technologies. Their life span is much longer when compared to other bulbs. The LED bulbs need no warm-up to brighten up and are power efficient. They immediately glow up when we turn them on.

Frequent turning on and off of these bulbs does not reduce their lifespan. The LED bulbs give light only in one direction compared to the fluorescence bulb. The market for LED bulbs is growing very fast. Experts claim that it will reach the landmark of 160 billion US dollars by the end of 2026.

Why Do LED Bulb Buzz?

LED Bulbs can be the source of dim light or bright light. It all depends on what your requirements are. LED bulbs do give buzzing, humming, and sometimes beeping sounds. We should not see it as a fault. These sounds are alarming and brutal to deal with. These little buzzing sounds are so annoying that it disturbs your focus.

If you are using any LED bulbs, there are chances that you may face the problem of buzzing. We will try to find out what is the reason behind it. We will also look for solutions to overcome this problem.

Do buzzing Indicates Fault?

It is a common thought to relate buzzing to the defectiveness of the device. It is not valid in all senses. Buzzing is a widespread phenomenon that occurs in most LED bulbs. The problem arises due to many conditions. Buzzing does not depend on the quality of the LED bulb mainly. It can happen in higher-quality bulbs as well as lower-quality bulbs.

Causes Of Buzzing:

The LED bulbs do not contain any filament. No moving objects are present in these bulbs, which could cause buzzing. But, there are other factors that can be the cause of buzzing. Let us have a look at them.

Surge Wattage:

We often notice a buzzing sound in LED bulbs when the microwave is running. It happens due to the power pressure on the same circuit. The appliance extracts more energy from the circuit. As a result, it leads to the buzzing of LED bulbs. These incidents happen more when you are in the kitchen. It is because highly power-consuming appliances withdraw more wattage from the same circuit.

As we already know, these devices are mainly made as energy-saving devices. It is due to the internal drivers. These drivers have the function of reducing the wattage of the LED. It leads to a little power overflow in the circuit when high-power-consuming devices are on.

LED bulbs try to adjust the overflow of power, as a result of which buzzing is present. The voltage is according to the requirements of the LED bulb. Wiring drawbacks can also result in the buzzing of these bulbs. Buzzing can also occur if the circuit breaker is not up to the task. It can result in other severe damage to appliances as well.

Fixation Of Problem:

It would be best to inspect the electric circuit to rectify this problem. Electric circuits are usually composed of many wiring systems. They are not easy to understand. A proper electrician can diagnose the problem only and come up with a solution. We should separate the electric system of LED bulbs from other appliances. These appliances include the ones which use high power if feasible. It is one of the best ways to solve this problem permanently.

Inappropriate Dimming Setup:

The switched power supply produces and controls the operational power of bulbs. Switches have a built-in transformer in their structures. This transformer helps to adjust the voltage. Chokes and coils are also present to avoid the unnecessary generation of the current. LED bulbs need switches that produce a voltage of 110 V. These bulbs may need as less as 9 watts. So, we supply a voltage of more than 110; it will make a buzzing sound in the bulbs.

If the switches are incompatible, they can allow uneven power flow. These inconsistent voltages result in a flickering or buzzing sound. It is important to note that this problem is not present in other types of bulbs. Their structure can adjust to little changes in heat. This phenomenon is not present in LED bulbs due to limitations in their structure.

Fixation of problem:

LED manufacturers are working to diminish this problem by various methods. We perform the incorporation of resin to reduce this problem. Yet, it is not that useful. If the power has high intensity, it can still make it buzz.

Thus, the best solution in this regard is to get high-quality switches. It would be best if you used those switches compatible with your LED. It is essential to have switch compatibility. Otherwise, the overflow will cause the buzzing of these bulbs. You should install compatible switches in place of incompatible switches.

Loose Wiring:

It is evident that the voltage fluctuations cause the LED bulbs’ buzz. These fluctuations in the voltage can be due to many reasons. Loose wiring is a significant problem leading to an unstable power supply. Loose wiring is also one of the many causes of house fires. That is why we should address this issue cautionally. If there is any problem like loose wiring, we should solve it as quickly as possible.

Fixation Of Problem:

Suppose you have taken all the necessary measurements and done everything possible. But there is still a buzzing problem. In that case, you must check your wiring connections. The specific location within the circuit may have a loose wire.

The electrician should examine the elements of the recessed lighting. He should counsel you appropriately if you change the wiring or not.

Is Buzzing Dangerous?

It would help if you analyzed whether the sound is coming from the circuit breaker. You should see it as quickly as possible if it is coming from it. If the sound source is an LED bulb, it is not dangerous. There are a few easy repairs if the wiring is causing the buzzing.

You should secure any loose connections and fasten the bulb’s screws. You should take proper measures to avoid this buzzing, as described above.

Conclusion:

From the information above, we can say that buzzing or flickering is not dangerous. It is prevalent in LED bulbs. We can solve it quickly with the help of a few measures. But LED bulbs are energy savers. They are cheap, readily available, and have longer lifespans.

But they have a few drawbacks as well. Buzzing and Humming are one of them. For your mind peace, it is necessary to take care of it. One must follow the above-given instructions to prevent it.
