Top 26 Brands of DALI Control System of Lighting In The World

DALI is the most popular control system for automating your residential and commercial lighting. Though DALI is a standardized protocol, purchasing DALI products from a trusted brand is a must to ensure optimal performance and reliable interoperability.

Therefore, I bought you the top 26 brands of the world supplying top-notch DALI control systems of lighting globally. Besides, you will also get the necessary guidance to purchase the right DALI product with essential certifications:

DALI Control System: The Basic

DALI stands for  “Digital Addressable Lighting Interface.” It is a digital protocol that automates the lighting system in the building. Using DALI, you can control individual LEDs or a group of LEDs to get the desired light output.

Unlike the traditional 0-10V analog dimming, DALI uses digital signals to communicate with lighting fixtures. This offers you smooth dimming (0-100%) and allows preset lighting scenes. Therefore, using the DALI control system, you can adjust the light setting of your space to your requirements. You can further integrate this system Building Management Systems (BMS) for centralized control over your lighting.

The best part is that DALI is an international standard and manufacturer-independent protocol. That is, it is interoperable; controlling devices from different manufacturers can seamlessly integrate.

DALI Control System

A Brief History of DALI Technology

The digital communication protocol, DALI, was first released in the late 1990s as an alternative to analog 1-10V dimming. It soon became very popular as it offered individual light control and had scene-setting capabilities. However, the common issue that this DALI version faced was interoperability issues caused due to inconsistent testing. To eradicate these issues and to upgrade DALI features, it launched DALI-2 in 2024.

The latest DALI technology, DALI-2, is a game changer. It introduced independent testing and certification of the DALI-2 product to maintain strict standards. This further included switches and sensors as part of the DALI system. The key improvements that DALI-2 brought include-

  • Standardized dimming curve
  • Support for tunable white and color control
  • Cloud-based monitoring
  • Remote management
  • Backward compatibility with older DALI systems

DALI Vs. Other Light Controlling System

DALI vs. 0-10V Control

DALI is a digital protocol, whereas 0-10V is an analog control system. It adjusts the brightness of the light by changing voltage levels. Using these 0-10V controllers, you won’t get individual access over the LEDs as DALI offers. Instead, all devices with 0-10V controllers receive the same signal and act identically.

Though 0-10V controllers are easy to install, they don’t give the same flexibility as DALI. These are used only for dimming the light; unlike DALI, they don’t support advanced features like changing CCT or individual LED control.

DALI vs. DMX512 Control

Both DALI and DMX512 controllers are digital protocols. However, DMX512 is more advanced and designed for a complex and more extensive setup of theatre and stages. DALI is designed to control lighting in commercial and residential spaces.

Compared to 64 devices supported by DALI, DMX512 supports up to 512 devices on a single network. Besides, it offers more advanced light-controlling features that manage dynamic lighting effects like moving heads, strobe lights, and color-changing LEDs.

Therefore, if you need an architectural light-controlling system, DALI is the go-to option, and for entertainment purposes, DMX512 control is best.

DALI Vs. KNX, LON, and BACnet

KNX, LON, and BACnet are a more comprehensive protocol compared to DALI; these are used to control the whole building. Whereas DALI is designed only for lighting control, KNX, LON, and BACnet cover lighting, HVAC, security, entry systems, lifts, and more building-controlling features. This makes them more expensive and is suitable for large-scale installations across buildings.

Case-Study & Real-World Application Of DALI

DALI control system lighting is widely used in a variety of industries. It is best for smart home lighting, but other sectors like- offices, hospitals, restaurants, and hotels also use DALI for smart light control. The most common application includes the following:

1. Office & Commercial Lighting

DALI allows precise control over your office light setting. Thus, you can adjust the brightness CCT of your office space at the personalization level. This way, the employees will have a comfortable working space to boost their productivity.

Besides, DALI gives full control over your building lighting, which is an energy-efficient feature for commercial applications. It has a daylight sensor, which adjusts the brightness of light automatically considering the daylight. As a result, energy consumption is reduced.

2. Industrial Lighting

DALI offers safe and efficient lighting for factories and workhouses. The motion sensory features turn on/off the lights based on the occupancy of the workstation. Thus, it minimizes the power consumption by many times.

3. Smart Home Lighting & IoT

The DALI control system is widely used in residential applications for smart home lighting features. It allows you to adjust the brightness, CCT, and settings to your requirements. Moreover, preset lighting features are also available with DALI.

The best part is that integration with IoT makes the task easier. You can do all this directly from your smartphone via apps. By linking DALI with IoT platforms, you can control your lighting via smartphones, voice assistants, or centralized management systems.

4. Healthcare and Hospital Lighting

Regarding hospital lighting, the patient’s comfort zone is the ultimate priority. In this case, DALI offers circadian rhythm-based lighting for a healthy light setting. It further provides a customizable brightness level for different medical needs.

5. Hospitality Industry

Hotels use the DALI control system for their lobbies, guest rooms, and public areas. This way, they maintain a comfortable ambiance for their visitors and guests. Using this system, providing customized lighting for different hotel zones becomes easier. From providing a soft, relaxing ambiance for guests in the evening to bringing an altering ambiance for the hotel staff to work, it is all possible with DALI.

How are DALI Lighting Systems Wired?

The DALI lighting system is wired following a master-slave architect. The controller is here the master who gives commands, and the lighting is the slave who follows the commands and acts accordingly.

dali lighting systems wired

Wiring DALI is pretty simple as it requires no separate wiring groups; all the devices are wired together in parallel. DALI sends digital signals using a two-wire control bus, which supports both positive and negative polarity. You can also wire them with standard five-wire cables without any special shielding. Once you are done with wiring, set the controller software to manage the system.

Troubleshooting common wiring issues:

  • Though DALI is protected against polar reversal, double the connection for seamless signal transmission
  • All the devices must be connected in parallel, not in series
  • Use 1.5mm² cable to maintain signal integrity and prevent voltage drops
  • Don’t exceed 300m for the bus length, this can lead to signal loss

Advantages & Limitations of the DALI Dimming System

ProsCons
• Open standard compatibility
• Easy installation
• Centralized control
• Energy efficiency
• Real-time monitoring
• Customizable lighting
• Quick reconfiguration
• Seamless integration with BMS

• Need an expert to set it up; you can’t do it on your own

DALI-2: Key Upgrades and Performance Boosts

DALI-2 brings several upgrades and improves the old version of DALI-1. Here are the upgraded features that DALI-2 brings:

1st Upgrade: Stringent Electrical Characteristics & Increased Transmission Accuracy

DALI-2 offers tighter electrical requirements for signal transmission. This ensures the transmitted signal reaches the right palace in the right way, at the right time. Thus, DALI-2 maintains communication accuracy and boosts the overall performance.

2nd Upgrade: Additional Instructions with Extended Fade In/Out Time Range

One of the major drawbacks with DALI-1 was its limited fade-in/out time range. With the second update of DALI-2, this range is extended. It provides a high degree of flexibility, allowing fades from as short as 0.1 seconds to as long as 16 minutes. Thus, rapid scene change and light adjustment over an extended period are possible with DALI-2.

3rd Upgrade: Improved Communication Between Devices from Different Manufacturers

For better intercommunication between devices from different manufacturers, DALI-2 has a certification system. Under this, all the DALI-2 devices maintain a standard that makes the integration of devices from different manufacturers seamless. This way, the upgrade in DALI-2 improves interoperability and reduces dependency on any specific brand.

DALI-2 Compliance: The Need for Mandatory Certification

To carry the DALI-2 logo, your products must be certified by the Digital Illumination Interface Alliance (DiiA). To obtain the certification, a strict DALI test is conducted on your product to ensure it meets the standard.

This certification guarantees compatibility. As all the products follow the same standard, they can seamlessly communicate with each other. This way, the certification system makes the light control more efficient and flexible.

Switching from DALI-1 to DALI-2: Important Factors to Consider

DALI-1 has limited flexibility compared to the upgraded DALI-2 version. So, to add advanced features to your light control system, switching from DALI-1 to DALI-2 is a great decision. However, here are the facts you must condenser while doing so:

Backward compatibility: DALI-2 products are backward compatible with DALI-1; therefore, you can replace them simultaneously. However, the point to be noted is that the DALI-1 device will not support the advanced features of the DALI-2 control system.

Cost & Time: DALI-2 is more advanced and expensive than DALI-1. So, you must consider the initial cost plus the maintenance of DALI-2. Besides, installing the new DALI-2 requires rewiring and a learning curve, which can be time-consuming.

Certification: Before purchasing any DALI-2 product, you must ensure the product is tested and DALI-2 certified. This way, you can ensure proper compatibility within your lighting system.

Industry Trends & Future Developments of DALI

industry trends & future developments of dali

Enhanced IoT Integration

DALI is gradually being integrated with IoT protocols to facilitate remote control. In the coming future, we expect more interesting IOT integration with DALI to bring more automation and advanced real-time monitoring facilities.

Wireless DALI Evolution

DALI is gradually moving to wireless solutions. This shift undoubtedly simplifies the installation, scaling, and retrofitting process.

Data-Driven Lighting Control

To optimize performance, DALI systems are incorporated with sensor data and analytics. This opens up more opportunities to offer human-centric light settings. For instance, with data-driven light control, businesses can achieve higher efficiency and cost savings by adjusting lights considering occupancy, daylight, or energy usage patterns.

FAQs

The purpose of the DALI system is to standardize the light-controlling system to offer a more flexible solution. Under DALI certification, all products can seamlessly integrate, irrespective of manufacturing brand. Thus, DALI makes the light management system much easier.

Though both DALI and DSI are used as light-controlling systems, DALI offers individual control over lights that DSI doesn’t. DSI is a more basic control system and controls groups of light as a whole.

The DALI receiver is a signal-receiving device within the DALI control system. It receives signals from the master device or the DALI controls and directs it to the luminaries.

A DALI line should have, at best, 64 DALI devices. For optimal performance, it’s better to allow 50–55 devices per line.

DALI driver works in a bus system composed of two wires that send signals from sensors to the controller. The controller then sends the signal to the LED driver, who adjusts the light according to the received command.

Though the DALI control circuit uses a low-voltage bus (16V DC),  it can run with mains. This is because the main voltage powering the light and the DALI bus carrying the signal can share the same cable.

The Bottom Line

When choosing a DALI product for your light system, make sure it is DALI-certified and compatible with your existing system. Philips, Tridonic, Osram, ABB, Casambi, and all other companies included in this list offer DALI-certified products. So, you need not worry about interoperability; seamless integration is ensured here as they maintain DALI standards.
